For most of its recent history the plant was bred in concealment, under conditions that rewarded a single outcome above all others, and selection ran in one direction for decades: toward what was fast, uniform, and convenient to grow indoors. The result is a commercial gene pool compressed into a handful of closely related lineages, with much of the plant's deeper genetic and chemical range, the rare traits, the distinctive expressions, the natural resilience, quietly bred out along the way.



That loss is the opportunity. The diversity the commercial market set aside is where the most interesting chemistry and the most durable plants still live.
